Speaker Biographies
Fiona Angus, B.Sc., M.Sc., Head of Nutrition, Leatherhead Food
International
Angus has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in
science in nutritional medicine from the University of Surrey. She joined
the information group at Leatherhead in 1987, working in market
intelligence for a short period, before transferring to scientific and
technical information in 1989 to manage the nutrition information
services. In 1991, Angus became manager of the section, but continued to
maintain her interests in nutrition. In 2001, she became business manager
– nutrition at Leatherhead, to further develop Leatherhead’s service
portfolio in these areas, with particular interest in functional foods.
The following year, Leatherhead set up the nutrition and health forum to
undertake industry-relevant scientific research in this area, and she
became business manager for nutrition, sensory and consumer science, a
department covering nutrition, sensory and consumer research and market
intelligence. Since 2008, Angus has undertaken the role of head of
nutrition, a department covering nutrition testing and human nutrition
research. She regularly provides advice to companies on formulation and
claims substantiation for functional foods, and speaks internationally on
current health trends and developments in healthy food and drink markets.
Adam Ismail, Executive Director, Global Organization for EPA and
DHA Omega-3s (GOED)
Ismail is executive director of the Global
Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s, a proactive and accountable trade
association of the world's processors, refiners, manufacturers,
distributers, marketers, retailers and supporters of EPA and DHA and
Omega-3 fatty acids. GOED was founded in October 2006 and Ismail has
served as its first executive director since March 2007. Previously,
Ismail worked for three years in business development for Cargill Health
& Food Technologies, where he was in charge of their Omega-3 food
ingredient business and worked on new product development and acquisition
and licensing transactions for nutrition products. Prior to Cargill,
Ismail was a senior consultant at Health Strategy Consulting and Health
Business Partners, where he worked on investment banking transactions and
strategy consulting projects related to the nutrition and natural health
industries. Ismail also started the first e-newsletter in the nutrition
industry in 1999 on behalf of Health Strategy Consulting. He is
passionate about helping improve living situations for the poor in
developing countries and serves as treasurer of To Give Hope, a charity
that helps provide children in Ecuador with educational, psychological
and health support through after-school programs. Ismail, who is fluent
in Japanese and Spanish, received a bachelor’s of science and arts from
Boston University, and a master’s of business administration from the
IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.
Ian S. Newton, Principal and Managing Director, Ceres Consulting
Ian S. Newton, principal and managing director,
Ceres Consulting, received his education in New Zealand, graduating with
an Honours science degree in botany and zoology. Following post-graduate
research, he relocated to Canada. Newton joined Hoffmann-La Roche in
1979, and held a variety of positions including group director, human
nutrition, Canada, and eventually director of business development and
regulatory affairs, DSM Nutritional Products, USA, where he was
responsible for the development of various nutrients, new ingredients and
also directed nutrition public information programs as a resource for
health professionals, academics and the media. Newton has published on
the dietary and nutritional aspects of vitamins, long chain
polyunsaturated fatty acids and nutraceuticals in a variety of scientific
journals. Now retired from DSM, Newton manages his own consulting
business, Ceres Consulting, based in Markham, Ontario, specializing in
business and product development in the health and nutrition sector. He
has also consulted internationally for governments and global
organizations. He actively participates in many areas of human nutrition,
and is a member of AOCS, ISSFAL and IFT, and is involved in advisory and
boards of directors positions in health orientated companies and
nutrition related institutions.
