Animal Nutrition III – Regulatory Overview of “Dietary Supplements” for
Animals: Things You Need to Know and Mistakes Not to Make
The market and potential for “dietary supplements” for animals makes
this segment an attractive target for many companies. The fact is many
companies entering this market do not understand the regulatory
requirements for products marketed for animals, which are similar to
dietary supplements for people. In this presentation, we will cover the
history of the industry, the regulatory challenges, and the differences
when compared to the human dietary supplement industry. William Bookout,
founder and president of the National Animal Supplement Council will
review these topics and discuss what their organization is doing to
address the regulatory issues for animal products.
Speaker:
William Bookout is a founding member of the National Animal
Supplement Council, serving as president and chairman of the board of the
nonprofit organization since early 2002. Bookout is also president of
Genesis Limited, a company he founded in 1999 that provides both feed
products and non-feed products for companion animals. Prior to founding
Genesis, he spent 15 years in the human medical device, drug and animal
health industries, including executive positions with Medex Medical, the
All-Care Animal Referral Center (a specialty referral veterinary hospital)
and AnaMed International, and as director of sales and marketing for
Marquest Medical Products. Bookout received his bachelor's degree in
physical sciences at the University of Wyoming, and an MBA from Pepperdine
University, Presidents and Key Executives Program. He has been selected by
Health Canada to serve on the Expert Advisory Committee for Veterinary
Natural Health Products. Bookout was raised on a ranch near the town of
Wheatland, in Wyoming and, although he currently resides in San Diego, he
still considers Wyoming his home. He serves on the Board of Directors of the
University of Wyoming’s National Ambassadors as a student mentor and UW.
