“But I’m Not the Advertiser!”: Upstream Liability Under the FTC Act
Staff attorneys from FTC’s Division of Advertising Practices will address the popular misconception that only individuals and entities who advertise and/or sell directly to the consumer are potentially liable under the FTC Act for ingredient and product claims. Staff will discuss enforcement trends, identify particular problem areas, and suggest possible compliance approaches and risk-minimization strategies.

Speaker: Richard L. Cleland, assistant director, division of advertising practices, Federal Trade Commission; Christine J. Lee, Esq., attorney, division of advertising practices, Federal Trade Commission

The Health Benefits of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found in food. It can also be made in your body after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Vitamin D’s major function is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus, which helps to form and maintain strong bones. Vitamin D is a rising star in the dietary supplements industry, and recent studies suggest vitamin D may help maintain a healthy immune system and regulate cell growth and differentiation. Attend this session to learn more about the latest health benefits of vitamin D.

Speaker: Barbara Levine, RD, Ph.D., associate clinical professor of nutrition in medicine and director, Nutrition Information Center, Weill Medical College, Cornell University

Chocolate: From Ancient Remedies to Modern Medicine
Meso-American cultures revered the cocoa bean–the seed of the fruit of the cacao tree–for centuries, touting it for its sustenance and life-giving medicinal qualities. Today, nutrition scientists, chemists and other researchers have applied modern scientific rigor and discovered numerous health benefits associated with the consumption of cocoa-containing products such as chocolate. This presentation will review the history of cocoa and chocolate, its chemical composition, and the clinical data supporting potential health benefits.

Speaker: Debra Miller, Ph.D., senior nutrition scientist, The Hershey Company

Natural Ingredients with Biological Activity
Botanical extracts have been used for centuries by shamans and medicine men to treat many skin conditions and illnesses. Personal care companies, since their inception, have also been using plant extracts. Today, many companies base their entire product line on botanical extracts. New methods of extraction and characterization of the compounds found in botanicals have increased the variety and quality available for formulation. This presentation will cover some representative botanicals and their folklore, and identify the active constituents and some of the assays used to provide substantiation for their biological activity.

Speaker: Mindy S. Goldstein, Ph.D., executive director of Biological Research, Treatment Materials Development, The Estée Lauder Companies
