Methods Validation, Quality & Compliance
With the issuance of dietary supplement GMPs, quality has been defined in terms of identity, purity, strength and composition. In this session, experts provide examples of the types of specifications manufacturers may wish to adopt, and their views on the term “scientifically valid” as it applies to test methods. Learn from USDA experiences in developing an analytically-based dietary supplement nutrient database.

Moderator: Joseph M. Betz, Ph.D., director, dietary supplements methods and reference materials program, Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health
Speakers: Karen W. Andrews, assistant coordinator, dietary supplement ingredient database, Nutrient Data Laboratory, U.S. Department of Agriculture; Catherine A. Rimmer, Ph.D., research chemist, National Institute of Standards and Technology

Exotic Fruits: Health Benefits or Hype?
Recently, exotic fruits such as pomegranate, acai, mangosteen and noni have attracted immense consumer attention due to their potential human health benefits, resulting in increased sales of these food related-products. However, there is a need for well-designed research studies before claims can be substantiated. Join Navindra Seeram, Ph.D., as he delves into the research surrounding pomegranate and other exotic fruits. Learn how carefully conducted research can be used to substantiate health claims of these super foods.

Speaker: Navindra Seeram, Ph.D., assistant director, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Human Nutrition; assistant professor, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Opportunities for Weight Management in Food Products
In this session, an overview of the opportunities for weight management products will be provided. Various aspects will be discussed, such as hunger control, development of new ingredients, interaction between satiety and hunger control, and the possible mechanisms that play a role in weight loss, such as increased metabolism, fatty acid oxidation and increase of satiety hormones. Join international power house Unilever for this discussion of ingredients deemed effective and those which create a lot of hype, with no substantiation. If the ingredients business wants to be seen as responsible, it should base itself on proper clinical trials and an internal procedure that can survive rigid scrutiny.

Speaker: Peter Haring, global program director, weight management, Unilever

Grapefruit Seed Extract: Promising Botanical Anti- Microbial or Empty Promise?
Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), sold both as a dietary supplement and anti-microbial preservative, has been called everything from a miracle to a hoax. Proponents claim it is an effective anti-microbial. Research to date has not verified the activity of natural GSE, but has yielded some surprises. This presentation will explore the controversy surrounding this ingredient, and its future in the marketplace.

Speaker: Linda Chaé, president and chief formulator, Chaé Organics Inc.; Robert S. McCaleb, president and CEO, the Center for Natural Sustainable Enterprise; founder and president, Herb Research Foundation
