State-of-the-Industry Part I
Listen as representatives from the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Natural Alternatives International (NAI) and Natural Products Association (NPA) discuss current issues facing ingredient suppliers, natural- and healthy-product manufacturers and marketers. Questions to be addressed include: What is the impact of the dollar devaluation on the supply chain from foreign countries in the dietary supplement industry? Are “country of origin labels” a next logical consequence to the fall-out of contaminated raw materials?

Moderator: Mark A. LeDoux, founder, CEO and chairman, Natural Alternatives International
Speakers: Michael McGuffin, president, American Herbal Products Association; Steven M. Mister, Esq., president and CEO, Council for Responsible Nutrition; David Seckman, executive director and CEO, Natural Products Association

India Update
With a population that exceeds 1 billion people, India presents excellent opportunities for U.S. dietary supplement manufacturers. India is a source of ingredients and services, as well as a developing market for consumer products. With the passing of the Indian Food Safety and Standards Bill 2005, there is hope for the revitalization of India’s dietary supplements industry. As a result, dietary supplement manufacturers should have more of an opportunity to sell products to the Indian market. In this session, you will hear the latest information about India as a supplier and India as a customer.

Moderator: P. K. Davé, CEO, Nature’s Formulary
Speakers: Ranjit Puranik, CEO, Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd.–India; Bikram Singh Sajwan, CEO, National Medicinal Plants Board–India

Biomimetic Phytosterols with Moisturizing and Soothing Properties for Skin, Scalp and Hair Care Applications
Phytosterols are a class of lipid-like compounds found in all plants, and are structurally similar to cholesterol. In plants, phytosterols play an important role as a structural component of cell membranes, a role cholesterol plays in mammalian cells. In human skin, cholesterol is a major component of the stratum corneum lipidic cement in humans, thus helping to maintain a proper skin barrier function. Due to their structural similarity to cholesterol, phytosterols can act in a functionally similar (biomimetic) way to help strengthen the barrier function of the skin, providing protection and locking in skin moisture. Phytosterols have been shown to reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and have a soothing, anti-inflammatory effect.

Speaker: Sylvia Nefkens, Ph.D., product and marketing manager, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques
