India Update
With a population that exceeds 1 billion people, India presents
excellent opportunities for U.S. dietary supplement manufacturers.
India is a source of ingredients and services, as well as a
developing market for consumer products. With the passing of the
Indian Food Safety and Standards Bill 2005, there is hope for the
revitalization of India’s dietary supplements industry. As a
result, dietary supplement manufacturers should have more of an
opportunity to sell products to the Indian market. In this session,
you will hear the latest information about India as a supplier and
India as a customer.
Moderator: P. K. Davé, CEO, Nature’s Formulary

Biomimetic Phytosterols with Moisturizing and Soothing Properties for Skin,
Scalp and Hair Care Applications
Phytosterols are a class of lipid-like compounds found in all plants, and are
structurally similar to cholesterol. In plants, phytosterols play an important
role as a structural component of cell membranes, a role cholesterol plays in
mammalian cells. In human skin, cholesterol is a major component of the stratum
corneum lipidic cement in humans, thus helping to maintain a proper skin barrier
function. Due to their structural similarity to cholesterol, phytosterols can
act in a functionally similar (biomimetic) way to help strengthen the barrier
function of the skin, providing protection and locking in skin moisture. Phytosterols have been shown to reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and
have a soothing, anti-inflammatory effect.
