Alkemy™ in Action: Innovative Transformation of Leading
Bioactives into Category Differentiation Devices
The risk of bioactive ingredients becoming high volume
category leaders is their ultimate devaluation into a commoditized,“generic”
realm where margins erode. A novel platform technology, when applied to
bioactives like garlic and vitamin C, and when incorporated into beverage
systems, has demonstrated capabilities in transforming bioavailability,
tolerability, and human efficacy. This food ingredient-centric approach is the
subject of ongoing clinical trials in several application areas, including solid
dosage forms and “functional” beverages. Marketers and product innovators from dietary supplement and
beverage companies will obtain an early unveiling of this emerging and maturing
innovation.

LyCoQ™ and the Mediterranean Diet: Achieving Balance in the
Quest for Optimal Cardiovascular Health
Studies have shown that people living in the Mediterranean
region have lower rates of heart disease, despite their high fat intake from
olive oil and nuts. Mediterranean-style eating also includes plenty of fruits,
vegetables and whole grains, and limited amounts of red meat and processed
foods. Tomatoes, found in many recipes from this region, contain lycopene, a
heart-protective antioxidant. Two reputable brands
– Lyc-O-Mato® and CoQsol®
– have been paired to create a supplement designed to improve cardiovascular
health, called LyCoQ™. A leading cardiologist will explore facets of the
Mediterranean diet and explain the benefits of LyCoQ™ supplementation for a
heart-healthy life.

Setting the Clinical Standard for the Immune Category
The gold standard for efficacy of supplements is clinical
data. Biothera will present the past, present and future of its clinical
research program to support product efficacy and product claims for its lead

Svetol’s® Activity Supported by Bioavailability of
Chlorogenic Acid
Weight loss activity of Svetol®, a green coffee extract rich
in 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid and other chlorogenic acids, was confirmed in a
placebo controlled double-blind clinical study. According to the bibliography,
chlorogenic acids could modulate the glucose metabolism and therefore increase
lipids utilization. However, the mechanism of action depends on bioavailability
of chlorogenic acids. Absorption and metabolism of 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid was
studied in rats by Berkem to determine where and under which form this ester of
caffeic acid is absorbed. Nutritional intervention, in
situ intestinal perfusion and in
situ gastric infusion studies were carried out. For
the first time, chlorogenic acid bioavailability studies showed that the
chlorogenic acid is absorbed without structure modification from the stomach and
found intact into the blood. These results support Svetol®’s suggested
mechanism of action.

New Clinical Research – The HMRlignan™ Strategy for
Sustainable Women’s Health Support
Dr. Brown will focus on the potential health benefits that
lignans play in the different phases of a woman’s life. Plant-based lignans
are converted in the gastrointestinal tract to the human lignan known as
enterolactone. Of particular interest to women, has been the finding that higher
blood levels of enterolactone lower risk of breast cancer. Additionally, consumption of lignans has been associated with
decreasing menopausal symptoms, like hot flashes, as well as improved
cardiovascular health and cognitive function in postmenopausal women. Using data
from recent population studies, Dr. Brown will review evidence that points to
increased enterolactone levels resulting in breast, cardiovascular, and colon
health benefits throughout a woman’s life. Particular focus will be given to
the use of HMRlignan™, a highly bioavailable, low-dose source of lignans from
Norway spruce and the first direct enterlactone precursor available in the

Expandex™– Gluten-Free Products Made Better Using Modified
Tapioca Starch
The demand for quality gluten-free bakery items has increased

what gives bakery items texture and form. Expandex™ is a non-GMO modified
tapioca starch made by a proprietary process that imparts unique expansion
properties when used in baked and fried items. This new starch product gives

Nanotechnology – Unprecedented Bioavailability for CoQ10 and
Other Nutritional Supplements
Fat-soluble nutrients are essential to health but are not
