ImmunoLin®: Optimizing Immunity to Prevent Inflammation
While the consumer acceptance of probiotics signals a greater understanding of the connection between the GI tract and good health, which is encouraging, a healthy intestinal microbiota is only one aspect of gut health in the gut. Microbes and their by-product toxins, food, viruses and many other antigenic substances in the GI tract can promote inflammation, a central factor in many human conditions. ImmunoLin®, the first immunoglobulin concentrate with generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status, has tremendous promise for raising immunity and preventing over- activation of the immune response. Come and learn more about immune conditions and the role of the GI tract in today’s consumers and how ImmunoLin supplementation can improve their consumers’ health and longevity.

BioCell Collagen II® – A Natural Solution for Healthy Joints, Skin and Aging
BioCell Collagen II® (BCCII) is a naturally‐occurring complex of hydrolyzed collagen type II, hyaluronic acid (HA) and depolymerized chondroitin sulfate. It showed no toxicity in both acute and subchronic oral toxicity studies. Clinical bioavailability studies showed oral intake of BCCII increased steady‐state blood HA levels 60‐ fold as compared to control. A clinical trial demonstrated BCCII was well tolerated and effective in improving osteoarthritis‐associated symptoms as measured by WOMAC scores (p<0.05). Interestingly, BCCII inhibited hyaluronidase activity in vitro, implying it might help maintain HA levels in aging dermis.

Developments in Flavor Masking and Sweetness Enhancements Technologies for Stevia
Stevia extracts are considered the holy grail to product developers since they are natural sweeteners with no calories. But is this grail only half full? Taste is the main driver for consumers to purchase a product. Stevia’s inherent issues with bitterness, lingering sweetness, and other off-tastes pose a major challenge to creating great tasting products that consumers will purchase not only once, but repeatedly. This session will look at these issues with stevia extracts, the processing steps being done to make stevia extracts taste better, and the use of various ingredients to solve taste issues. This toolbox of ideas provide an overall view on how stevia extracts can be used to make naturally sweetened, no or reduced calorie beverage and food products consumers will love.

Zinc Citrate: A Healthy Foundation for Healthy Aging Products
Zinc citrate is a highly bioavailable form of the trace mineral zinc, which is essential to both healthy growth and healthy aging. Zinc is found in every component of the human body and is especially essential for healthy skin and nails, immune stimulation and bone and joint health. Although present in the diet, often only 20 to 40 percent of dietary zinc is absorbed due to competitive nutrients or metabolic processes. Therefore supplementation with a highly bioavailable form of zinc is a healthy foundation for healthy aging products.

Update on Marine EPA/DHA Omega-3 for Cardioprotection
Extensive population studies and recent clinical trials indicate increased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) plus DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) from marine oils can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and protect against cardiac death in those with heart disease. Independent of blood cholesterol-lowering , supplementation with EPA/DHA favorably improves many risk factors for heart disease including anti-arrhythmic, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic effects and blood triglyceride-lowering. A significant and early (within two weeks) reduction in triglyceride levels, a prevalent and under-controlled risk factor in the population, is readily seen upon appropriate supplementation both in those without or with statin medication for blood cholesterol-lowering. Current intakes in most countries of EPA/DHA are well below recommended targets for cardio protection. The use of high-quality EPA/DHA supplementation offers a cost-effective approach for filling the wide ‘nutrition gap’ without risk of exposure to environmental contaminants

Speaker: Bruce Holub, Professor Emeritus of Human Health and Nutritional Science at the University of Guelph, and founder of the DHA/EPA Omega-3 Institute.

Are Generic Claims Justified for Probotic Products? The Need For Strain-Specific Demonstration of Efficacy
The U.S. market is abuzz with foods and supplements touting their "probiotic" content. Claims of "digestive health" and "immune support" are commonly brandished for products with no clear ties to clinical research substantiating such benefits. Probiotics are sufficiently different even at the strain level that such claims require strain- and dose-specific substantiation to be truthful. Simply providing live bacteria in a product is insufficient for use of the term "probiotic" or for making efficacy claims. Dr. Sanders will discuss the importance of a comprehensive dossier that documents origin, identity, stability, safety and efficacy, thereby substantiating legitimate probiotic products.
