Location: Congress Center, Marco Polo 701, Level 1
Eating Berry Fruit Nourishes the Aging Brain
By the year 2050, 30 percent of the population will be over 65 years of age, and there is a high probability they will be exhibiting the most common behavioral changes that occur in aging, i.e., deficits in motor and cognitive performance. Therefore, it becomes important to try to forestall or reduce the likelihood of their development. Previous lab findings have suggested this might be accomplished by increasing the dietary intake of berry fruits. This may be the result of direct effects on brain signaling or indirect effects through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the polyphenols in these berries.
Speaker: Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Ph.D., research psychologist, U.S. Department of Agriculture at Tufts University

The Immune System and Dietary Supplements: What Does a Healthy Immune System Look Like?
The immune system is an extraordinarily complex combination of organs and specialized cells that act in concert to protect the body against invading organisms. What happens when this system doesn’t work properly? More importantly, what role can dietary supplements play in modulating this system? Dr. Udani will review immune system anatomy and pathology, examine the clinical evidence for dietary supplements to modulate this system, and provide specific recommendations for testing methodologies that can be used to support immune health claims.

Public Perception of Herbs and Dietary Supplements: How the Media is Communicating—and Miscommunicating—About These Products, the Industry and Integrative Medicine
In June 2009, the Associated Press published a series of articles about dietary supplements, herbs, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and related issues that appeared to focus on reporting negative aspects. The articles resulted in what many might deem a distorted view. Similar articles were also published by other media. This presentation will review the specific points and general themes that these articles and others discussed, and will confirm and rebut specific information and allegations.

A Natural Seaweed-Derived Mineral Supplement Provides Osteoarthritis Relief
Osteoarthritis (OA) is expected to affect over 59 million people in the United States alone by the year 2020. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, lack of activity and decreased range of motion, as well as decreased walking distance in subjects with moderate to severe knee OA. Two studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of a natural mineral supplement used for OA symptom relief and the ability to reduce the amount of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs consumed to manage pain. One outcome of this type of research might be to provide consumers with alternatives to current drug choices or the potential to reduce drug use. This presentation will discuss the effectiveness of a natural seaweed-derived mineral supplement for moderate to severe knee OA. Results of two randomized, double blind. placebo-controlled clinical trials will be revealed.
Speaker: Joy L. Frestedt, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer, Frestedt Inc.

The ROI of Education

The Future of Dietary Supplements as Pet Food Ingredients
Dietary supplements cannot be legally added to pet foods, but
this may soon change. Those pet foods containing unapproved ingredients could
potentially be declared adulterated foods, subject to recall and manufacturers
could face possible civil and criminal penalties, but possibly no longer. During
the past year, the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), the controlling branch
of FDA with the statutory responsibility for approval of ingredients for pet
foods, has undergone a landmark change in administrative procedures that may
smooth the way for ingredient approval. CVM is scheduled to initiate the
generally recognized as safe (GRAS) process, long in place for human foods.
However, unlike the regulations governing human food ingredients, CVM has
(informally) held that the use of any ingredient in pet food embodied an implied
claim. How, then, could a manufacturer add a substance to pet food, when CVM
does not recognize the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) as
applying to animals and is very cautious about a structure function claim, in
the absence of a nutrient claim? Also, because many proposed additions to pet
food are held to be "drugs," how can manufacturers avoid filing a New Drug
Application? These and other issues that confront the agency and manufacturers
for this new approval process, as well as the proposed mechanism for GRAS and
GRAS Notification at CVM will be described during this session.
