What is the biggest challenge facing the health & nutrition industry, and how is your company working to overcome it?

The flood of low qualified, unverified nutrient data into the marketplace. Nutrient data of questionable origin (crowd sourcing, scraping, etc.) is being used as a source for recipes, diets and product formulations. This information is in turn used to make decisions affecting health and wellness. Misleading information may result in making poor, misguided choices. By contrast, ESHA obtains its data directly from the manufacturer and goes to great lengths to verify the data internally to assure accuracy. Our data, when used in formulations or analysis is consistently accurate.

How does your company support its customers in developing new innovative products?

Genesis® R&D removes the burden of regulatory compliance. ESHA goes to a great deal of time and effort to insure that labels generated by the software are compliant with the most current labeling regulations. This allows our customers to focus on product development and refinement. Genesis® R&D frees them to do what they do best: create.

What are the three biggest trends to watch in the health & nutrition space, and how do you expect they will play out?

Compliance with governmental agencies will continue to challenge manufacturers in the coming months and years. This will include GMP, regulatory compliance, organic certification and ingredient sustainability and tracking. The increased use of software applications creates an opportunity to increase efficiency and decrease costs while simultaneously complying with complex labeling requirements.

What is the biggest challenge facing the health & nutrition industry and how is your company working to overcome it?

The greatest challenge facing the industry is how to rapidly and efficiently develop new products to meet the exploding consumer demand for mainstream foods. This need is compounded by a similarly increasing demand for supplements with validated health benefits. Further complicating the situation, companies must meet these challenges within an aggressively competitive and complex market environment.

Integrated Project Management (IPM) is a company whose expertise is specifically directed to help health and nutrition companies improve the productivity and ROI of their product development efforts through more effective innovation project portfolio management.

How does your company support its customers in developing new innovative products?

IPM helps companies improve delivery of their innovation pipeline through the development of optimal processes, and the successful execution of projects, programs and critical initiatives. The results have been dramatic and include the following examples:

  • Integration of project management practices to effectively manage real-world challenges faced by organizations, such as achieving cross functional collaboration, leading logistically challenged teams across many geographies, and in providing objective guidance to multiple partners as they work to develop and launch products more quickly
  • Disciplined rationalization and tracking of all project activities, milestones and metrics to assure projects are executed on time and on budget
  • Development of criteria and prioritization mechanisms to compare the viability of multiple projects to each other, and assure optimal allocation of resources to advance the most viable opportunities, and kill those that do not meet success criteria
  • Development of appropriate stage-gate success criteria based upon a well articulated product value proposition and objective metrics tied to consumer benefits
  • Development of governance and decision-making processes to assure cross-functional resolution of risks and critical path items from idea to launch
  • Creation of real-time, relevant business information to support decision making, including tools to assure reliable and rapid senior management access to quality data

What are the three biggest trends to watch in the health & nutrition space, and how do you expect that they will play out?

  1. The growing consumer demand for mainstream foods with health benefits will result in the need for improved innovation productivity to deliver more value-added products to consumers faster and at lower prices. Companies will seek creative ways to expand their health and wellness product lines through acquisition, partnering, and creative product development.
  2. Increasing consumer concerns about safety of supply and validity of health benefits will continue to result in more stringent and complex regulatory requirements to assure safety and efficacy.
  3. More complex global supply chains will require companies who survive and thrive to achieve improved supply chain productivity through efficiencies in vendor and sourcing relationships, data and document management, and improved visibility to supply chain integrity to ensure food safety.

What is the biggest challenge facing the health & nutrition industry, and how is your company working to overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges facing the health and nutrition industries is bringing scientific discoveries and advancements to the general population for the betterment of people’s health. The challenge of our industry is to identify those important advances in health and translate them into products for the general market. One of the most outstanding examples over the last 5 years is the nutritional supplement vitamin D (cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol). Vitamin D’s role in nutrition has traditionally been associated with calcium metabolism, bone health and the prevention of rickets. Recently, there has been an explosion of new medical research demonstrating that vitamin D is not just a "vitamin" but is really a powerful hormone that directly regulates hundreds of genes and is critical for regulation of many biological pathways. Vitamin D has now been firmly established in the scientific literature as a key player directly involved with cancer, diabetes type 1 and 2, multiple sclerosis, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease amongst other diseases. Other medical studies showed that over 50% of US and European populations are deficient in vitamin D. The great strength of the academic studies has directly led to the FDA and European Regulators to increase the recommended daily allowances of vitamin D and to give strong consideration to enhance through fortification the vitamin D content of foods and beverages. Vitacyclix has been a leading supplier of vitamin D water-soluble liquid dairy concentrates and powders for over 50 years. We have taken up the challenge of increasing awareness of the importance of vitamin D to human health. We also have developed new nutritional products such as Vita-You™ Liquid Vitamin D supplements and novel AcneCycle™ skincare treatments and AMFORA™ cosmetic beauty products featuring vitamin D as a key component for dermatological health.

How does your company support its customers in developing new innovative products?

Vitacyclix is a relatively small company with a very knowledgeable technical staff, a flat management structure and a willingness to listen. Our two biggest advantages are speedy response times and knowledge in a broad range of nutritional, beverage, dairy and personal care product areas. Our customers are able to take advantage of our desire and flexibility to take on new projects. Innovation is one of the most important selling points for Vitacyclix and we welcome companies to contact us to solve their specific product needs. We work with all types of companies from large multi-nationals to small mom and pop manufacturers. We have successfully developed new beverage ingredients using proprietary technology, reformulated standard products to meet new specifications, conducted research and development of novel product ideas brought to us by our customers.

What are the three biggest trends to watch in the health & nutrition space, and how do you expect they will play out?

Three of the biggest trends in the health and nutrition markets are the use of natural components to foods and personal care products, development of functional beverages and enhanced government oversight. There has been a wide recognition of the presence and harmful effects of chemicals, toxins and synthetic petrochemicals found in our food supply. There is now desire to substitute natural components in place of chemicals. Getting “back to nature” is a real trend setting goal for the industry which mirrors today’s public opinion and needs. In a related area, people’s desire to improve their well being through healthy diet has spurred the development of beverages containing natural functional ingredients. Thus, we are seeing beverages containing natural anti-oxidants, new vitamin combinations, cholesterol-lowering and lipid nutrients for improving cardiovascular health and reducing stress. In response to these new products on the market, there is greater regulatory government oversight as far as proper labeling claims and nutritional content is concerned. Vitacyclix supplies custom blends of many functional nutrients including bioflavonoids for vascular health, phytosterols for lowering cholesterol, vitamin A, D and E concentrates and powders, as well as nutritional proteins and fibers. Our goal is to provide authentic, safe and effective functional natural ingredients to the food, beverage, dairy and personal care industries. We also offer our own brand of all natural skincare and nutritional supplements that exceed regulatory requirements.

What is the biggest challenge facing the health & nutrition industry, and how is your company working to overcome it?

The biggest challenge facing the health and nutrition industry lies in dealing with its own success. Consumers are responding positively to new products, as evidenced by the industry’s rapid growth. Established food and nutrition companies such as Nestle, Pepsi and non-traditional health and nutrition companies like DuPont Danisco are entering the space. With this success comes a higher level of scrutiny. Not only will companies have to put an emphasis on manufacturing and cGMP compliance, but an increased emphasis will be required for the science behind the health and nutrition products.

PerkinElmer is uniquely positioned to help health and nutrition companies with our breadth of solutions. Whether its analytical instrumentation technologies to enable cGMP compliance or life science tools to enable new biomarkers or measure health and nutrition impact, our scientific instrumentation helps this industry support their products. Our electronic laboratory notebooks and applications, that convert any paper-based compliance process to a digital workflow, enable companies to successfully manage compliance. Finally, maintaining a scientific laboratory is not the core activity most nutrition companies focus on. PerkinElmer’s OneSource Business can manage and maintain a scientific laboratory for nutrition companies. Thus, their scientific resources can focus on new product development.

How does your company support its customers in developing new innovative products?

With a 75 year history of advancing and leading scientific innovation, PerkinElmer has always been a leader in innovative products. We understand that the process of developing new products is not a straight road and unique customer needs arise. With this knowledge, we engage with our customers as partners and seek to apply our scientific knowledge, tools, and offerings to fit their needs. Our broad portfolio of analytical tools, life science tools, and informatics applications enable us to be uniquely positioned with our customers to support their product development.

What are the three biggest trends to watch in the health & nutrition space, and how do you expect they will play out?

  1. There will be an increased need for better documentation of cGMP compliance and scientific proof of nutrition and health claims. This will play out in the form of more requirements placed upon health and nutrition companies in the form of regulations.
  2. The value of the industry’s products will increase. Broader and more regular adoption of industry offerings will become mainstream and utilized by customers. The attraction for economically motivated adulteration or substitution will increase. Companies will have to maintain diligence on testing and screening to maintain the consumer’s trust.
  3. Food and pharmaceutical companies will spend more on growing health and nutrition business. The health and wellness trends driven by consumers will maintain this as an attractive business segment. As consumers emphasize more nutritious and natural processed products, traditional food and pharmaceutical companies will seek to develop consumer offerings.
