Future Trends for Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are widely used in dietary supplements. Each class of phytoestrogens is characterized by specific health effects. As an example, soy isoflavones have been studied mostly to prevent and mitigate menopausal symptoms and postmenopausal bone loss. Flax lignans are studied for their beneficial effects on breast tissue in woman, as well as prostate function and hair-loss in men. However, phytoestrogens can do much more. The presentation will review the clinical data performed with SoyLife, a soy germ isoflavone extract and LinumLife, a flax hull lignan extract. Furthermore, suggestions on how to bring this science to market will be discussed.

Practical Strategies for Manufacturing Safer Supplements and Increasing Consumer Confidence

A 2008 survey sponsored by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), found that the majority of Americans are confident in the safety and quality of dietary supplements. We need to continue to move towards zero tolerance of adulteration and spiking of supplements. Manufacturers that are GMP-compliant can still be at risk for accepting a sub-par material without realizing it because traditional specification tests can yield false positive results, and are designed to confirm what is expected rather than rule out that the unexpected is present. New technology based on pattern recognition of spectral fingerprints can screen material in seconds for unexpected adulterants. Strategies to set up check points from warehouse receipts to blending to finished products minimize risk and improve the overall safety of supplements.

ICP-MS & FTIR: Combining Techniques for the Big Picture

Many analysts are not cross trained in organic and inorganic techniques and thus miss out on an important benefit of combined techniques. This session will present information on how to take the data from both ICP-MS and FTIR to properly identify a compound to meet the identity requirements of the dietary supplement cGMP’s. For our case study, we will examine mineral amino acid chelates. These are high-end mineral supplements that are chelated to amino acids, which is supposed to provide greater bioavailability. However, many labs only test mineral content and may pass counterfeit raw material. Learn how your ICP-MS and your organic solutions like FTIR can rapidly provide the data you need for the challenging new regulations.
