Vegetarian Softgel Capsules with Unique Benefits
Location: Room E
FMC Corporation’s carrageenan- and
alginate-based softgel capsules offer consumers
unique alternatives to traditional gelatin
capsules. Both technologies use seaweed
extracts, eliminating concerns associated with
using animal-derived products in soft capsules.
Capsules made from carrageenan offer a
vegetarian, clear, and odorless alternative to
gelatin; and alginate-based capsules are
naturally enteric, seamless, and allow for a
reduced dose-form size over traditional
capsules. This presentation will provide an
overview of both technologies that have been
developed by FMC and are now commercially
available through the company’s licensing
partners.
Speaker: Robert Schmidt, Product Manager,
Soft Capsules, FMC Corp. |

Astaxanthin
Mechanism of Action for Eye Fatigue
Location: Room E
In this presentation, a double blind, cross over
study examining the positive effects of
astaxanthin on accommodation and eye fatigue
will be discussed, as well as the
pharmacokinetics and detection of astaxanthin
that was found in the blood and ciliary body of
rabbits after supplementation. A review of the
human clinical studies showing significant
improvement in accommodation and eye fatigue
with astaxanthin supplementation will also be
discussed.
Speaker: Eiji Yamashita, Ph.D., Global
Research & Development Manager, Fuji Chemical

Weight
Management and DiAfin
Location: Room E
DiAfin, a patent pending novel composition of
standardized Free-B-Ring flavonoids and flavones
extracts from two medicinal plants, showed
reduced body weight in mice fed high fructose
diets. In a human clinical study, weight loss,
reduced BMI, and lowered fasting glucose were
also observed. Further investigation of the
mechanism of action showed regulations of
pro-inflammatory cytokines both at gene
expression and protein production levels. DiAfin
also regulated gene expression outcomes most
specifically in the pathways related to fructose
metabolism and gluconeogenesis. This
presentation will provide a summary of the in
vitro and in vivo studies and the ongoing
clinical evaluations with DiAfin.
Speaker: Lidia Brownell, Director of
Clinical Studies, Unigen |

ProEssential™ Omega-3
Flaxseed Ingredients for Fortified Foods
Location: Room A
The market for Omega-3 fortified foods is
forecasted to be $7 billion by 2011. The major
growth areas of Omega-3 fortified foods are
baked goods, pasta, bars and fitness drinks.
Consumer awareness of Omega-3 fatty acids and
their beneficial effect on risk factors for
heart health and inflammatory disorders is
currently very high and growing. While there are
a variety of Omega-3 fatty acid sources
available, flaxseed is the richest dietary
source for alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) Omega-3.

Positive
Effects of PureWay-C® on a Marker of Oxidative
Stress and Biomarkers of Inflammation
Location: Room B
Innovation Laboratories, Inc.’s newest area of
research includes a recent clinical study
conducted on PureWay-C®, and Natramune™. PureWay-C
had outstanding results in 40 healthy
volunteers, evidencing that PureWay-C is more
rapidly absorbed and highly retained by the
human body than other vitamin C formulations.
PureWay-C is also directly associated with
greater reduction of plasma levels of C-reactive
protein and oxidized LDL, beneficially impacting
the cardiovascular and immunological systems.
Additional work has been done to examine the
immune protective effects of PureWay-C in
combination with Natramune. The enhanced immuno-protective
activities of Natramune with PureWay-C were
shown to have positive results. When taken
together, the study indicated that uptake at the
cellular level is more rapid with additional
anti-inflammatory benefits.

Emerging
Science in Cognitive Health and Nutraceuticals
Opportunities
Location: Room A
Certain brain amyloid plaque accumulations that
develop with aging are believed to contribute to
memory decline and reduced cognitive abilities.
Furthermore, research indicates that amyloid
deposition is found in the pancreas of 90
percent of patients with adult onset diabetes.
This presentation will assess the role of beta
amyloid plaques in cognitive health and type II
diabetes, and biotechnology’s emerging
discoveries of nutraceutical solutions. Focusing
on the latest research of nutritional products,
we will discuss a roadmap for market success and
will tackle the issues surrounding market
drivers, consumer relevance and product
ideation, as well as how to apply these new
scientific discoveries.
