The Untapped Potential of Hot Red Pepper Extract
The active principals in the universally-consumer food source of hot red peppers–capsicum extracts–have been proven to reduce appetite levels and increase energy expenditure in humans and animals in numerous studies over the past three decades. However, their application in weight management and sports nutrition supplements is a relatively new endeavor. Discover the immense potential for nutritionists to incorporate capsicum extracts into new dietary formulations and hear about the benefits and challenges of using this potent extract in dietary supplements. Review the results of the clinical studies surrounding blending capsicum extract with other natural components. Learn which encapsulation methods deliver functionally effective levels while at the same time minimize the oral and gastric irritation that unprotected capsicum can cause.

Making Sense of the Serious Adverse Event Reports (SAERs) Regarding Supplements Reported to FDA
Enforcement of the 2006 Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act (DSNDCPA) began in December 2007. FDA published guidance documents regarding compliance and reporting of “serious” events to FDA; but, there has been no guidance on how “serious” and “non-serious” reported events are being evaluated by FDA or others to ensure products are meeting expectations of safety, warranting consumer and regulator confidence. Experience demonstrates high variability in quality and integrity of documented incidents, and there is no recognized method regarding scoring of events by experts or FDA so as to assess potential associations between alleged adverse events and product use. Do these reported events signal safety issues? How can manufacturers review their own experience, present their findings to customers, regulators and the media? Hear about new methods and tools to address these issues and learn how to demonstrate a positive track record of product safety.
Speaker: Rick Kingston, PharmD, president regulatory and scientific affairs, SafetyCall International PLLC

Issues and Trends in the Herb Market: The Latest on Market Trends, Statistics, Regulation and Research
Despite the downturn in the domestic and international economies, the market for herbal dietary supplement ingredients and herbal products in North America grew at a fairly steady rate in 2008, displaying signs of what may be termed soundness, robustness, and increased diversity and maturation. Retail sales of herbs in all channels of sales increased in 2008 compared to 2007. The real question is how well did herb sales fare in the last quarter of 2008, when news of the economic recession began to become more widespread? This presentation will discuss some of the latest market statistics and some of the most promising ingredients in the herbal marketplace. Particular focus will be placed on the burgeoning market for stevia-based sweeteners, and related regulatory developments in the United States and internationally. It will also discuss some of the latest research from clinical trials on herbal ingredients and proprietary herbal preparations.
Speaker: Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director, American Botanical Council, and editor, HerbalGram

Qualifying Criteria for Superfruit Status

Handling an FDA Inspection in the Age of GMPs
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently increased the number of inspections at dietary supplement facilities in order to verify compliance with the new GMPs for dietary supplements. Starting in June 2009, all companies with more than 20 employees will have to be in compliance, and will be subject to inspection. Attend this session to review the basics of defending an FDA inspection, as well as how to protect your rights while FDA is at your facility. Also learn how to deal with FDA’s demands for review of GMP compliance, which will involve a substantial change from prior FDA inspections.

The Global Health and Wellness Market – Today and Tomorrow
Euromonitor International’s presentation will provide an overview of the health and wellness (HW) market globally, highlighting the biggest markets in this category, including naturally healthy and fortified/functional products, followed by an analysis of other sectors such as better-for-you, organic food and beverages, vitamins and dietary supplements (VDS), and slimming products. The focus will then move to organic products, the category that had the most dynamic growth in 2006/2007. The presentation will also highlight the role of VDS in foods and beverages and show some examples of increased product sophistication–products targeting more closely the needs of an ageing-demographic and a younger active population that have “no time to waste” and turn to prevention. Euromonitor will also underline the importance of supplementation. Supplementation is growing in popularity as a stand-alone product and is also being incorporated into foods and beverages in an attempt to offer a palatable alternative in supplementation. The functional market area has experienced a number of successful products, but legislation poses a hindrance for growth; two new successful combinations are already under the microscope and their safety is being questioned. The presentation will finish with a summary of the future development of the HW market. Analysis will focus on the challenges the industry will face in this cold economic climate.
Speaker: Daniel Latev, industry manager, OTC healthcare and nutritionals, Euromonitor International

The New Age of Data Driven Marketing
Natural product companies have traditionally used conventional ‘push marketing’ to help their retailers sell products – advertising in consumer magazines, TV, Radio, etc. These methods could be supercharged if manufacturers knew more about the actual consumers who are buying (or not buying) their products. The process would be even more effective if the advertising could be sent to specific customers based on who they are and what they buy (or don’t buy). Manufacturers are product expert, and retailers are customer experts. Imagine what happens when the product expert and the customer expert collaborate. In this panel, a prominent manufacturer, successful independent retailer and Dave Williams, creator of Living Naturally’s Loyalty Genius, a data-driven target marketing system for the natural product industry, will discuss the challenges of today’s micro-markets and how collaborative, intelligent marketing based on demographics and purchase history can help retain customers and increase sales.
Speakers: Gerard McIntee, vice president, marketing integration, NBTY Inc.; David Williams, vice president, business development, Living Naturally LLC
10:00-10:50am
Dietary Supplement Market Trends and Opportunities

The dietary supplement market has responded to these demands with a broadening array of products aimed at narrowing niches at one extreme to products that singlehandedly address a widening array of health issues at the other extreme. This presentation will explore product and market trends within the dietary supplement market with a focus on new product developments in the United States and around the world. It will also examine evolving consumer attitudes toward dietary supplements, health and nutrition.
