The Safety of Nanomaterials in Personal Care Products
A brief overview of what is known about the hazard potential of nanomaterials and the potential for exposure as a result of their use in personal care products will be presented. Because nanomaterials may have different toxicological properties and exposure potentials than the substances in bulk form or they may be totally new substances, there have been concerns regarding the need for increased research to evaluate their safety and exposure potential. There have been recent position statements and frameworks developed for conducting safety and risk assessments of nanomaterials and it is likely that certain components and aspects of the safety assessment process will need to be modified to account for the differences of nanomaterials from “conventional” chemicals and/or particles. Modifications to existing toxicological study protocols may be necessary to include rigorous physicochemical characterization and to account for potential changes in dosimetrics and toxicokinetics. Because of the diversity of the target populations and the consumer products that may contain nanomaterials, carefully designed toxicological studies and exposure assessments with appropriate defaults will be needed for conducting robust risk assessments and to ensure safety of consumer products containing engineered nanomaterials.
Speaker: Annette B. Santamaria, Ph.D., senior manager, ENVIRON International Corp.

Cutting Edge Ingredients in Cosmeceuticals
The functional cosmetic and skin care market has been expanding to include products with a wide range of new ingredients. This presentation will take a look at some of the latest developments in cosmeceutical ingredients, including where they are coming from, what they do and what we should see in the future. Some of those ingredients include peptides, maca root, baobab, acerola, turmeric, peony and moringa seed. Discussion will also cover how these cutting-edge ingredients tie in with the key beauty trends Mintel has identified for 2009, including austerity chic, turbo beauty, extreme ethical and beauty food.
Speaker: Lynn Dornblaser, director, CPG trend insight, Mintel International Group
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29
9:00-9:50am
Emerging Trends in Natural and Organic Personal Care Products
The growth in natural and organic personal care products has presented many challenges to ingredient suppliers. Not only must the products be functional, increasingly sophisticated and affordable, but they must be “healthy” and free of parabens, phthalates and other questionable ingredients. And now, even the fragrance or scents used to add value to the product are subject to the same scrutiny as the personal care base or other components contributing to the finished product. This presentation will examine how fragrance and health are now intimately linked in the product development process at most personal care companies. It will also explore from a formulation and marketing perspective, how certain natural and organic fragrance components are valued as much for their perceived healing and therapeutic properties as they are for their olfactive contribution to personal care products. Finally, the vast array of certifications that abound in the natural and organic personal care world will be explored, and which ones are the most meaningful and beneficial to consumers will be clarified.
Speakers: Jack Corley, executive vice president and director of sales and marketing, Trilogy Fragrances Inc.
10:00-10:50am
Beauty from Within
The concept that external beauty starts on the inside of the body is starting to gain ground with consumers. Today, food and beverage companies are introducing products for beauty, and cosmetic companies are introducing supplements. What is the state of the science? What products are on the horizon? And what do consumers really want? This session tackles these questions and more as we examine the growth of a new category that has risen from the convergence of cosmetics and nutrition.
Speakers: David Djerassi, founder and president, Intrachem Technologies
11:00-11:50am
Intellectual Property Protection of Natural Ingredients
As consumer demand for more natural products grows, and as innovation continues, how does a company protect itself? What role can patents and other forms of intellectual property play in this highly competitive world of natural ingredients? Learn strategies to consider as you carve out your place in the market.
Speakers: Louis C. Paul, founder, Louis C. Paul & Associates, PLLC
