Fit-for-Purpose – Analytical Approach for Compliance in the DSGMP Millennium

'Fit-for-Purpose' testing is the buzz phrase in compliance testing. New technology in analytical testing is advancing; can newer technology do anything to raise compliance of dietary supplements? Whether testing a vendor's specification or verifying label claim in a finished product, what testing approach is the best fit? What are the do's and don'ts?

    Speaker:

    GMP Implementation Pitfalls

FDA remains unimpressed with the dietary supplement industry's implementation strategies. Recent FDA 483 observations indicate a wide disparity between FDA's intent and the industry's compliance efforts. FDA's approach to bring about change to GMP compliance follows closely with previous methods successfully used by the agency. The goal of this seminar is to uncover these tactics and avoid GMP implementation pitfalls.

Gamma-Tocotrienol, a Gem in The Vitamin E Family, Targets Prostate Cancer Stem Cells

Emerging evidences support that prostate cancer is originated from prostate cancer stem cells (CSC). Here, we demonstrate that γ-T3 is the most potent form of T3 against prostate cancer and can specifically cause apoptosis in prostate CSC. Pre- and post-treatment of cancer cells with γ-T3 reduced the tumor initiation rate in animal models by more than 60 percent. Our data suggested that γT3 is an effective agent in targeting CSC, which may account for its anti-cancer effects.

What Makes a Strain Probiotic? Survivability, Persistency and Function

The ability of probiotic bacteria to survive digestion and reach the intestinal tract must be carefully considered when weighing any strain's potential. Microorganisms that fail to complete the journey will have little chance at providing any desired health benefits. Researchers at the University of Nebraska are now studying the means by which various lactobacilli, including the DDS-1 strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus, tolerate digestion and persist in the GI tract of healthy adults. Our results have shown these strains are able to not only survive digestion, but also flourish in the intestinal environment.

A Single Oral Dose of Nattokinase is Capable of Significantly Decreasing C-Reactive Protein Levels in a Cardiovascular Risk Group within a 24-hour Window

Ten subjects with three or more documented cardiovascular risk factors were asked to ingest a daily dose of Nattokinase (NSK-SD®) and have their blood drawn at five subsequent time points within a 24-hour period. Subjects were observed to have improved levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) when pre-dose levels were elevated or abnormal. The positive results on heart and vascular health are due to the strong antioxidant properties of astaxanthin and its anti-inflammatory effect. Two of the most recent studies will be presented with a summary of accumulated scientific evidence supporting the benefits astaxanthin is showing for cardiovascular health.

Pterostilbene - The Next Generation Resveratrol

Pterostilbene is a relative of resveratrol naturally found in small fruits such as blueberries and cranberries. Like resveratrol, it functions as an antioxidant and an anti-aging agent, improving mitochondrial function and protecting against metabolic disease by activating SIRT1 and mimicking calorie restriction. Unlike resveratrol, pterostilbene has greatly improved oral adsorption and metabolizes more slowly in the body, allowing more time for its antioxidant activities to take place. Since pterostilbene is also synergistic with resveratrol, addition of pterostilbene to existing resveratrol products may enhance their efficacy. The pterostilbene products developed by pTeroPure are based on the technologies licensed from the USDA ARS and the University of Mississippi.
