The Incredible Story of DSHEA: Past, Present and Future
The passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in 1994 legally defined the term "dietary supplement" for the first time ever and laid the foundation for the way that supplements would be regulated. Without DSHEA there would be no structure/function claims, no Office of Dietary Supplements at NIH, no GMPs specific to supplements, no process to follow when introducing New Dietary Ingredients, no use of scientific literature in conjunction with products, and many of the products we take for granted today would not be available at all. Now, with supplements in the media, regulatory and political spotlight, what does the future hold for DSHEA? Opponents call for changing or even eliminating DSHEA. Proponents argue that the law has still not been fully implemented or enforced. And consumers still just want high quality supplements and reliable information about them. The incredible story of DSHEA is one that every person involved with supplements should know and understand. From ingredient companies and manufacturers, to retailers and consumers, to health providers, journalists and politicians, DSHEA has touched everyone. This exclusive report brings together insights from some of the people who were, and still are, a part of this important story.
